The New York Post reports that Manhattan booksellers have seen a run on sales of Andrew Morton's "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography."
They say visitors to the city are taking copies home because stringent libel laws in the UK mean it is not for sale there.
The book, out last week, contains a string of lurid allegations about Cruise and his Scientology religion.
Cruise has reportedly threatened to file a $100 million lawsuit against Princess Diana biographer Morton, and publisher St. Martin's Press as a result.
St. Martin's Press said in a statement: "It is unfortunate that lawyers for both Mr. Cruise and Scientology have felt the need to threaten us with legal action at every step of the way.
"While the book has been variously accused of being too scandalous and not scandalous enough, we believe that those who take the time to read it will find a consistently fair - and consistently fascinating - portrait of the real Tom Cruise."
