Heath Ledger's father today made a heartbreaking trip to the apartment where his son died exactly a week earlier. Kim Ledger and a group of male friends made the low-key visit to the scruffy loft where his actor son spent his final days. And as he searched through his belongings, he would have seen the bed where Brokeback Mountain star died 1-week-ago.
"It must have been heartbreaking for him," one insider said.
"Heath's family has been through so much this last week but to see where Heath actually died must painfully bring home the reality of it all."
Heath moved to the apartment on New York's trendy Broome Street after splitting from Dawson's Creek star Michelle Williams and leaving the beautiful townhouse they shared together in a leafy street in Brooklyn.
Their daughter Matilda lived with mum Michelle in Brooklyn but Heath was still devoted to his only child and regularly looked after her.
Even so, his apartment was said to be barely decorated.
"It was like a crash pad, with a mattress and loads of skateboards but not a hell of a lot more," one insider said.
"That must have also been a bit of a shock for his dad - seeing how he was living despite all of his success."
Kim Ledger arrived in a blacked-out SUV and parked in an alleyway at the back of the building. Security made sure reporters and photographers were kept well away. "It was a very low key visit," an onlooker said.
"Anyone walking passed Heath's apartment would have had no idea that such an emotional visit was being made."
