Sex and the City's on-screen sizzle could have been driven by real-life sex. A new behind-the-scenes book claims that two of the show's on-screen lovers had an affair off-screen too.
And although the couple have yet to be identified, it could explain why at least part of the passion that made the show such a world-wide hit.
The book is being written by Clifford Streit, the former manager of Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, and is a behind-the-scenes memoir of the series' early days.
It is tentatively titled "Unbecoming Stanford" because Stanford Blatch, Carrie Bradshaw's flamboyant gay best friend played by Willie Garson, was intended as a caricature of Streit.
The book says the notorious tensions between the show's stars started because Kim Cattrall was "a natural comedienne, and a scene-stealer in the best possible sense - the camera went right to her".
And it claims executive producer Darren Star passed on Ashton Kutcher for the show because, he privately confided after a dinner meeting: "I don't see this kid going anywhere."
Streit also recalled an embarrassing episode from a night-out where the cast celebrated their initial success.
Streit recalls getting so drunk on Cosmopolitans with cast members that he actually threw up on Chris Noth's shoes.
"I see my wit has failed me again," he recalls quipping.
