Robert Lee Johnson, 39, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and domestic battery.
He told police he owns the gun because he "watches too much CNN" and is in fear one day someone is going to "kick in his door".
It is unclear why the gun was under his child's pillow.
Police were called to the home in Port St Lucie, Florida, late at night after Johnson had reportedly come to blows with his stepfather. They were found bleeding.
According to the police report, the stepfather had overheard Johnson yelling at the child and confronted him about it.
