COMEDIAN Jerry Seinfeld is in hot water after making fun of a writer who claims his wife copied her book. The Bee Movie star called Missy Chase Lapine a "wacko" during an interview in a late night talk show, after similarities emerged between his wife and the author's cook books.
But it seems now the joke is on him, as Lapine is suing Jessica Seinfeld and accusing him of defamation in a legal double-whammy.
In a lawsuit filed in New York, she says the comedian's wife "brazenly plagiarized" from her 2007 book 'The Sneaky Chef' when writing her own title, 'Deceptively Delicious'.
Both volumes focus on how to get picky kids to eat healthy meals - but Jessica Seinfeld's book ended up becoming a best-seller lauded by influential TV personality Oprah Winfrey.
Lapine also accused Jerry Seinfeld of launching a "malicious, premeditated, and knowingly false and defamatory attack" on her character during an interview with David Letterman.
"She's unhappy that the work has been stolen. When you look at the two works and compare them you can see that that's clear," Lapine's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, told the New York Post.
"Then, when the author's husband goes on television and defames her and attacks her reputation, that's cause for enormous concern, and reason for her to vindicate her work and her reputation," he said.
But a spokesman for the Seinfelds told the neewspaper she was just trying to get attention for her book and that the comedian's remarks were just his own opinion.
"There's no truth whatsoever to any claim of plagiarism," insisted Richard Menaker. "We will vigorously challenge this misguided use of the legal system."
