Legendary actor Paul Newman has undergone surgery to save his life - after being diagnosed with cancer. According to the US tabloid The Enquirer, the screen star entered a New York hospital recently for the secret operation.
Everything went well but Newman, 83, still shows no signs of slowing down and remains very involved on his passion for car racing.
He is fit enough to go out and has been seen outside his home in Westport, Connecticut, where his neighbours say he looks well.
An Enquirer reporter spoke to the superstar on January 18 as he was leaving his restaurant Dressing Room with his wife of nearly 50 years, Joanne Woodward.
The once heavy smoker did not deny he had cancer but instead sidestepped the question and responded in a gravelly voice: "As you can see, I'm doing okay.
"I feel pretty good for an old salt.
"Of course I have days when I feel more aches and pains than others but overall I'm hanging in there.
"It's all this good hometown food I eat that keeps me going."
While Newman played down his health condition, one insider close to the star told the Enquirer that he recently checked into a New York hospital for serious surgery 'related to cancer' which left him convalescing for three weeks.
The insider told the Enquirer: "He initially was having trouble breathing and a hard time walking.
"After Thanksgiving, his family became concerned and took him to see a New York specialist.
"He was admitted right away into the hospital where he underwent surgery.
"He's bounced back now but he's not a well man and people in his company are trying to keep this very quiet."
Another friend of the star also confirmed to the Enquirer that he recently underwent a 'major medical procedure'.
An observer at Newman's restaurant also added: "Paul does look frail and his thinning hair has gone nearly white.
"But he does seem feisty for a man of his advanced years.
"After exchanging small talk with some employees he and Joanne got into matching steel-grey SUV's to follow one another home.
"Before Paul left he played speed racer and gunned it for a couple of laps around the parking lot."
The insider close to Newman also revealed there is something else that is keeping the star looking forward to the future - his 50th wedding anniversary with Joanne.
The couple are due to celebrate their milestone on January 29.
The insider added: "Whatever health problems Paul has mean nothing to him because he's lived to see this magical milestone with Joanne."
