Paul McCartney and Heather Mills might be in the middle of one of the world's most bitter, and indeed public divorces battles - but that didn't stop the 65-year-old music legend showering his estranged wife with $!6,000 worth of gifts for her 40th birthday - even though she was secretly hiring a firm to spy on him. Paul reportedly had his driver deliver a $4,000 Cartier watch, a $10,000 gift card for posh London store Harvey Nichols, and bags stuffed with top-of-the range beauty products.
A touching handwritten card to Mills, said: "Have an amazing day, despite what's happened. Hope we can be friends. P x."
But as Paul was trying to make nice with Heather, she was in attack mode - arranging a former MI5 spy to try and make him look like a bad dad.
Mills, dubbed Mucca by British tabloids due to her porn past, is said to be terrified that the former Beatle will apply for full custody of their four-year-old daughter Beatrice when their divorce hearing resumes next month.
So she desperately hopes to snatch film footage of him drunk during the day.
According to reports, Heather hired the team of investigators from Ireland for a week before Christmas to spy on her former husband - but was forced to cancel, and pay a $3,000 fee, as Paul was still recovering from heart surgery and not drinking.
Heather has re-booked the $3000-per-day detectives for a week-long watch later this month, when they will try and get a secret film of the music legend drinking.
A source said: "Heather was furious when she had to cancel the first watch. She was convinced Paul was going to go out with a friend on a drinking session, and that she would be able to catch him. To be honest, if Sir Paul wants to go out with a friend and have a few drinks it has no bearing on his capability as a parent.
"But Heather is clutching at anything she can to make Paul look bad."
Heather needs to get her hands on some cash quick - which is why she's trying to put Paul in a bad light. She is living on a $2million overdraft from Coutts bank, and owes her former divorce lawyers Mishcon de Reya $4million.
A source told Britain's News of The World newspaper: "Since her campaign to get the public's sympathy went wrong, Heather has racked her brains for ways to discredit Paul.
"This plan with the private investigators is her latest idea. But by going to such extremes to make him look bad, she's just made herself look even worse."
