WGA won’t picket Grammy Awards

Grammy AwardThe biggest awards night in the US record industry has been spared from picketing by Hollywood's striking screenwriters.

The Writers Guild of America last night announced it will not target the Grammy Awards next month despite having previously threatened to do so.

It means Grammy nominees like Beyonce and Justin Timberlake will not have to cross picket lines at the spectacular show.

The multi-talented pair also star in movies and are members of the WGA's sister union for TV and film perfomers, the Screen Actors' Guild.

WGA leaders made their decicision as it emerged they will open "informal discussions" with studios today aimed at re-starting official contract talks that collapsed on December 7.

The threat of an awards boycott by SAG members sabotaged the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month.

Organisers were forced to scrap their traditional extravagant ceremont for a news conference to announce the winners.

Beyonce's father and manager last week issued a statement saying she planned to attend the Grammy's whether the ceremony was picketed or not.

But the threat of a picket is still looming over the Oscars, set to be staged on February 24.
