Teenager arrested on suspicion of plotting to hijack a plane

A teenage flight passenger has been arrested on suspicion of plotting to hijack a plane.

The FBI marched the 16-year-old schoolboy off Southwest Airlines Flight 284 from California to Nashville on Tuesday night.

Authorities at Nashville International Airport allegedly discovered handcuffs, rope and duct tape in his bag.

It's reported the boy, who cannot be identified, revealed his original plan to commandeer the plane during questioning. He is now in  custody and faces charges.

US reports originally claimed the teen had aimed to crash the plane into a Hannah Montana concert in Louisiana.

But the FBI has dismissed this, saying it's not yet known whether the boy would have tried to crash the aircraft.

"His plan had a low probability of success," said FBI spokesman George Bolds.

The boy is said to be suicidal but was calm throughout the journey and didn't attempt to hijack the plane.

His California home has been searched and a 'mock cockpit' found.

The airport, Homeland Security and the airline have not yet commented on the incident.
