OSCARS bosses said the show will go on, after the writers' strike led to the shock cancellation of the Golden Globes. The on-going dispute in Hollywood led to the actors' union stopping their members from crossing picket lines for the usually glitzy Globes ceremony.
With no nominees due to turn up, the show was cancelled and replaced by a press conference.
But Oscar organizers said they were hopeful of reaching an agreement with the writers' union WGA that would allow the highlight of the awards season to go ahead.
Bruce Davis, the executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, added: "At this stage we are still making our plan as normal."
The WGA has already said its members will not be allowed to write the script for the Oscars show, but has not yet explicitly confirmed if it will picket the ceremony.
But Davis said that while the Oscars could probably survive the absence of writers, picket lines would pose a headache.
"I think we could absorb not having writers if they don't put up a picket line," Davis said. "But a picket line is a whole new problem."
