Johnny Depp is set to replace tragic actor Heath Ledger in what was to be his latest film role, it has been revealed.
The 28-year-old Australian actor - who was found dead in his downtown Manhattan apartment on Tuesday - was just six weeks away from finishing fantasy flick The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
Now the film's director, Terry Gilliam wants his pal Johnny Depp, 44, to film the remaining scenes.
A studio insider said: “There is a point in the film when Heath falls through a magic mirror. He could change into another character after that and that is where Johnny would come in.
“It’s a weird, fantasy, time-travel movie so Heath’s character could easily change appearance. It would be a poignant moment.
“Johnny’s not working at the moment so everyone is praying he will do it.”
Last night, Heath's ex-fiancée and Brokeback co-star Michelle Willaims arrived in New York with their two-year-old daughter Matilda.
It also emerged that just three days before his death, while filming Doctor Parnassus in London, Heath had a furious bust-up with bosses on the movie after they refused to reshoot a scene the perfectionist star was unhappy with.
An insider said: “It’s a big clue as to the state of mind Heath was in.”
Meanwhile, the maid who found the actor’s body revealed yesterday how he died as she was working in the next room.
Theresa Solomon said she had heard him snoring at 1pm as she worked just yards away.
She told cops: “The last time I saw him he was lying face down. I didn’t think anything was wrong. I thought he was sleeping.”
