Hollywood star Heath Ledger - who died on Tuesday, went on cocaine and ecstasy binges with British supermodel Naomi Campbell, it was claimed last night. The Australian actor, 28, was found dead in New York apartment on Tuesday. He was naked, face down and strewn in pills.
At least three of the drugs found were believed to have been prescribed in Europe. And it is believed Ledger picked them up in London where he was filming last weekend.
The NYPD confirmed that a rolled-up $20 bill was found near Ledger's body - but that no illegal drugs were found in his apartment.
NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly says that no drug residue was found on the note, but that it will be sent for testing.
Commissioner Kelly did not elaborate on whether the police think Ledger used the rolled up note to take drugs.
Sources close to the late actor said Ledger’s hard partying ruined his relationship with former Dawson's Creek star Michelle Williams - who he split from in September last year, and with whom he had daughter Matilda, now two.
Last night the New York medical examiner said toxicology reports to determine what drugs the Aussie actor had in his body when he died would take at least ten days.
Ledger’s close friend Shekhar Kapur probably heard his last words. In a phone call with the movie director he asked him: “Wake me up.”
Kapur explained: “I last spoke to him the night before he died. He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day. He made me promise I would call him in the morning and wake him. I tried but didn’t get any response.”
Claims of the Australian native's drugs binges came from Rebecca White, who worked as Naomi Campbell’s assistant from 2001 until 2004. She claimed to have witnessed the pair using cocaine when Ledger first found Hollywood success.
She said: “When I was working for Naomi I saw Heath do drugs a few times. He was new on the scene but everybody was hailing him as the new 'It Boy' actor.
“We had been hanging in Naomi’s bungalow at the Bel Air Hotel. Heath asked Naomi if she had any cocaine - I used to carry it around for her - and I remember giving him the packet and he went off, back and forth throughout the night.”
Rebecca also claims that she bought Ledger cocaine a few days later. “Each time I got an eight ball - four-and-a-half grams. The second time he came up all three of us spent a night doing coke in her bungalow. It was quite decadent. We were there for five or six hours.”
Campbell's former assistant claims that she also saw Ledger’s wild side at parties hosted by rapper P Diddy, though the music mogul, real name Sean Combs, is well known for his aversion to drugs.
Fellow revelers, who reportedly included Kevin Spacey and Donatella Versace, equally had no idea of what Ledger and Campbell were getting up to.
She added to British newspaper The Sun: “We all went to Paris for another fashion party a couple of weeks later. We went to one of Puffy’s (Diddy) parties at this club. There was coke and a big bag of ecstasy pills.
“Naomi gave Heath a handful of these little blue pills and I remember him putting them all in his mouth at once and swigging a bottle of Cristal Champagne.”
Adds Rebecca “Heath wanted to be a family man. He adored his daughter.
“But his partying was a problem. Michelle felt very uncomfortable with it and dropped him out of her life.”
