TRAGIC actor Heath Ledger lived in a "brokedown" state in his apartment, it has emerged. The Brokeback Mountain star's plush $26,000 per month Manhattan home was virtually unfurnished and his bed was just a mattress on the floor.
Neighbours said the reclusive actor's Soho pad was just a crash pad in which he seemed to take little pride.
Ledger, 28, moved in to the Soho apartment in September after splitting with fiance Michelle Williams, the mother of his two-year-old daughter Matilda.
The acclaimed actor was found naked in the apartment on Tuesday (Jan 22) surrounded by prescription anti-anxiety and sleeping pills.
It has been reported that he had not fully come to terms with the break up with Williams and was battling depression.
The couple met on the set of Brokeback Mountain, the film that netted Ledger an Oscar nomination and won him critical acclaim.
In November he said he suffered from insomnia and was regularly taking Ambien sleeping pills.
More recently it had been reported that he had pneumonia. Ambien is not recommended for people with respiratory disease.
Ledger was found by his maid on who knocked on the door of the upmarket Soho loft to tell him his masseuse had arrived.
When they couldn't raise him they entered the room and found him unconscious.
The emergency services were unable to revive him pronounced him dead fifteen minutes later.
Pills were strewn around the linen, police sources said.
Ledger's family denied he killed himself.
