Britney Spears' parents are expected to appear on US talk show Dr Phil on Tuesday - but their troubled daughter has refused to take part. The television psychologist warned that Spears was in "dire need" of medical help after he visited her in hospital on Saturday.
It had been thought that he was trying to persuade the chart star to go on his nationally syndicated programme this week.
But now it has been claimed that Spears was furious when he showed up at the psychiatric ward where she was being held. And she wouldn't even talk to him - despite the small-screen shrink's claims that he was brought in to help.
A source said: "Based on the interaction between Dr Phil and Britney, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show."
Dr Phil - full name Dr Phil McGraw - released a statement on Saturday in which he said he had spent an hour with Spears, 26, at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles shortly before she was discharged on Saturday.
He said: "My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning [sat] in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention.
"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car."
He told US television show Entertainment Tonight: "I am very concerned for her."
Celebrity website TMZ.com claimed that Dr Phil showed up at the request of Spears' parents, Jamie and Lynne.
They reported: "We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again, as his release states -- we're told if he was walking behind her, that's news to her._
Sources say Dr Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom [sic] and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday. "We're told she [Britney] absolutely will not appear."
A spokesman for Cedars-Sinai hospital refused to comment.

Currently, Spears, 26, is said to be holed up at her Beverly Hills mansion.
She was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital late on Thursday after she reportedly refused to return sons Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, to her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
She was pictured being stretchered out of the Beverly Hills home looking dazed and confused and carried into a waiting ambulance.
It has been claimed she downed a potentially deadly cocktail of vodka and prescription drugs shortly before the ambulance arrived. She has lost all visitation rights to the boys after the very public breakdown.
