James Blunt reveals the key to writing sad songs

James BluntJames Blunt has revealed the key to writing depressing love songs - get your heart broken as many times as possible.

Despite dating a string of beautiful women including, blonde heiress Camilla Boler, the singer admitted his failed relationships inspire him to write 'miserable songs'. "You've got to have the inspiration (to write songs) so you've got to try and date as many women as you possibly can and then get dumped as often as possible and then your heart is in a right mess," he said.

Blunt said the songs on his second album, All the Lost Souls, are depressing because he wrote them in Ibiza during the winter.

"I sat in Ibiza through the winter on my own with a piano and a guitar and wrote some more miserable songs," he added on the Paul O'Grady show.

"You'd think Ibiza is a warm place but in the winter it's freezing cold and a Spaniard nicked my boiler.

"So I sat there with an overcoat and a hat on and a fingerless gloves so if any of the songs sound sad to you, you can understand why."
