Troubled Britney Spears has been named MTV's Top Artist of 2007 - despite her shambolic comeback performance at the network's music awards. The popwreck surprisingly topped a list including divas Rihanna and Beyonce and rapper 50 Cent.
Critics had written Britney off after she struggled to lipsynch along to her track Gimme More and staggered vacantly around the stage at MTV's Video Music Awards in September.
But the disastrous performance and her increasingly bizarre behaviour only helped convince MTV that 2007 was "The Year Of Spears".
MTV said: "Before 2007, Britney Spears was just your average Mouseketeer-to-Mom blonde pop star with over 83 million albums sold, and a couple of divorces and babies under her belt.
"But after her shocking performance at the 2007 VMAs, the hair clippers incident, more legal woes than Enron, and one of her most risqu? videos yet, 2007 will forever go down in history as The Year Of Spears."
