The stars return to the red carpet for the Screen Actors Guild Awards

Brad Pitt and Angelina JolieThe stars returned to the red carpet last night - despite the Hollywood writers' strike for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

A-listers including Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise were at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to celebrate the cream of US cinema and prime time television.

The awards were the first major televised ceremony to get a waiver from the Writers Guild of America, whose picket threat caused the Golden Globes to be cancelled earlier this month.

And the big winners last night were TV mobsters 'The Sopranos', who whacked their TV rivals by picking up three awards.

The mobsters bowed out in style at the end of their final series as the cast picked up the 'Outstanding Perfomance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series' award.

Tony Soprano himself - James Gandolfini - was voted Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series.

And Edie Falco, who played Tony's long-suffering wife Carmela, took the Outstanding Female Actor award.

Other winners celebrating success included Daniel Day-Lewis, named Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role for 'There Will Be Blood'.

Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett missed out in the Female Actor category, where the award went to Julie Christie for 'Away From Her'.

The 'Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture' award was presented to the actors from 'No Country For Old Men' by Tom Cruise.

Also among the winners was rapper-turned actress Queen Latifah, although she could not be there in person to pick up 'Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries'.

The cast of the US version of 'The Office' were celebrating after taking Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

And Ruby Dee was voted best 'Female Actor in a Supporting Role'.

Veteran film and TV actor Charles Durning was honoured with the 'Lifetime Achievement Award'.
