Bruce Willis plays the harmonica on the David Letterman show

Bruce WillisHollywood hardman Bruce Willis gave up his day job to play harmonica in a chat show band.

The Die Hard star took time out from the writers strike picket lines and made a surprise appearance on David Letterman's talk show.

"I'm unemployed right now, supporting my fellow Guild members out there in Hollywood," he said.

"Frankly I'm just a little tired of freezing my balls off out there on the picket line," he joked.

Willis, 52, remained on stage with Letterman's band throughout the show, singing lead vocals and playing the harmonica.

An excited audience chanted "Bruce" and he was introduced to the crowd.

The Sixth Sense star gave it his all, belting out the rock and roll tunes during advert breaks and as guests entered the studio.

Fellow actor Sylvester Stallone pointed at the band and applauded Willis before sitting down for his interview.

The show ended with Letterman, Willis and Stallone riding motorbikes down the street outside the New York studio.
