American Idol back with seventh series

American Idol LogoThe seventh series of American Idol kicked off with a host of odd performers - as the reality show returned to US TV.

The show was back on US last night (15 January) with a number of 'memorable' auditions.

Philadelphia tour guide, James Lewis made an impression with judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson for all the wrong reasons, and was laughed at as he sang religious song 'Go Down Moses.'

Lewis wasn't the only contestant that found himself the butt of the jokes.

A man, known only as Benjamin shocked the judges in a Princess Leah costume and was told to leave and shave his chest before he even attempted to audition by Paula Abdul.

Benjamin didn't let the judges down and returned later in the day, without his chest hair.

Unfortunately his vocal performance of 'Don't Cha' by The Pussycat Dolls didn't even make it past the first verse.

There were some notable auditions that made it through to the first round.

20 year-old Chris Watson performed a rendition of Uncle Cracker's 'Follow Me,' which Simon Cowel described as "very good," declaring that when Watson walked into the room he thought "here's a star."

Kirsty Lee Cook, 23, who trains for cage fighting also gave a memorable audition with 'Amazing Grace.'

Simon declared that he loved her country tone and was looking forward to hearing  Cook sing another song in the next round.
