Grammy award winner Amy Winehouse is well on the road to recovery, according to her mum. Janis Winehouse says her songstress daughter is on her way back to the top of the charts thanks to a two-week stay in rehab.
The Back to Black singer won five Grammy Awards - despite not being able to make the ceremony in LA because of problems with her visa application.
Her mum believes not being able to collect her awards in person gave Amy the kick she needed to turn her life around.
She said: "I think she had a back against the wall situation like if you don't get cleaned up you can't get the visa and you can't tour. I was like 'wake up Amy'.
"I was helpless There was nothing I could do because Amy had to do it for Amy. "Addiction is something that once it's got hold of the person it's very hard to get them off."
The 24-year-old performed via a live satellite link to Los Angeles from a studio in London.
Janis said: "We all felt that was the best she's performed.
"I think it would have been too much for her because all of the travelling. If Amy were there she would be lost in it. She would be a little girl lost in it all."
Amy's mum has always known her daughter was destined to be a star.
She said: "I knew she was good. We all knew she was good but in that world you can be good for maybe five minutes, a month or two but Amy just gets better.
"Amy is as she is. There are no double standards. What you see is how she is.
"She is a very genuine and sincere girl. She was always singing at home and we'd have to say 'Amy be quiet.' She just did it all the time."
Janis thanked the medical staff caring for Amy but says her daughter will continue to receive support.
She said: "She will see a therapist and she will still be getting help because she wants the help.
"She's on the road to recovery and that's what it's about," she said in an exclusive interview with GMTV.
