Zac Efron to star in New York Period drama

Zac EfronTeen heartthrob Zac Efron will swap High School Musical for a New York Period drama.

The teen star has signed up for an adaptation of the Robert Kaplow novel 'Me and Orson Welles.'

The movie will be set in 1937 New York and is centered on a high school student, Efron, who walks the streets of New York and is noticed by legendary movie director and actor Orson Welles.

Efron's character then lands a role in the production of 'Julius Caesar', which shot Welles to the top of the business.

The movie will be directed by Richard Linklater, who did 'Dazed and Confused' and 'Fast Food Nation.'

The film will begin shooting in February in locations in New York, London and the Isle of Man.

He will then return to the Disney mega-franchise High School Musical in April.
