Roger Avary charged with drink-driving

Roger AveryThe screenwriter who wrote Pulp Fiction alongside Quentin Tarantino has been charged with drink-driving over a crash that killed a close friend.

Roger Avary, 42, won an Oscar in 1994 for the dazzling screenplay for Pulp Fiction - and also played his part in scripts for Tarantino's other hits, Reservoir Dogs and True Romance.

Police say he was driving a car that crashed in Ojai in Ventura County, California.

Avary's wife was seriously injured and a close friend killed.

Andreas Zedini, 34, who had been visiting tem from his home in Italy, was cut out of the crashed car by firefighters but died later on the operating table.

Senior Deputy Jim Popp of Ojai Police said: "Deputies began an investigation and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol.

"Roger Avary was arrested for felony D.U.I and booked into the Ventura County Jail.

"One of the passengers, Avary's wife, Gretchen, was ejected from the back seat and found by deputies in the roadway.

"Gretchen Avary was transported to Ojai Community Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

"The other passenger, Andreas Zedini, had to be cut from the car with the Jaws of Life by members of the Ventura County Fire Department."

Avary, who directed 'The Rules of Attraction', was later freed on $50,000 bail.

Avary was born in Canada but grew up California and got into movie-making after he started clerking at one of the first video stores in Soputhern California, Video Out-Takes.

He met Tarantino while working at another video store, Video Archives.
