Nicholas Cage loves the British weather

Nicholas CageHollywood star Nicholas Cage has revealed why he loves living in Britain - because it rains so much there.

The 'Gone in Sixty Seconds' star, 44, who shelled out a whopping $10m for a British castle earlier this year, has spent much of his life soaking up the sun in California.

But it seems the British weather is more his cup of tea. "I genuinely like British weather, he said. "I like the rain and the gloomy clouds.

"Plus, I have never had much luck with my allergies and the rain keeps the pollen count down. So I feel healthier, I can breathe better."

Cage is currently starring in new film 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets', where he plays Ben Gates, a descendant of a family of treasure hunters who have been searching for a mythical war chest.

In the film, directed by Jon Turteltaub, Cage reprises his role for an action-packed romp in which Gates has to break into Buckingham Palace and the White House as he tries to prove that an ancestor was not involved in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Cage's British retreat is Midford Castle, an 18th century, Grade I listed, stately home near Bath.

The Hollywood heavy weight admitted he loves diving into British food such as bangers and mash - but he hates driving on the left.

He added to Britain's Sunday Mail newspaper: "I was not comfortable because driving on the left is complicated.

"We had City of London police all over us while I was trying to do that.

"The police were very carefully protecting all of us but it's very hard for me to relax on English roads.

"So it is a work in progress."

He continued: "I am spending more and more time over here and I like English food."
