Britney Spears investigated by Blender magazine

Britney Spears, BlenderHere's Britney Spears on the cover of a US music magazine, draped only in a sheet and surrounded by cigarette butts and discarded energy drink cans. Or is it

Blender magazine admits on its cover in a 'Truthiness Alert': "This cover image is a composite photo. Britney did not pose for the picture. That, sadly, is not her body'.

The March 2008 issue of the music publication features an in-depth investigation into the troubled star's life.

The cover reads: "Britney Spears has lost her kids, her fans, her underwear and her mind.

"How Will It End?"

The magazine hits newsstands in the US on February 12.

For the article, The Road to Ruin, writer Michael Joseph Gross spent a month interviewing dozens of sources and trailing Britney with the paparazzi. But he didn't get to speak to the troubled star herself.

Former manager Johnny Wright told the magazine: "I'm not pointing fingers, but I can't believe that she woke up one morning and said, 'I don't want my family, or anyone else I knew, to be in touch with me anymore.'

"People say she needs to go to rehab.  I think she just needs a friend - somebody not caught up in Hollywood, not looking for a paycheck.

"Somebody she trusts has to step up and break it down for her."

Another former manager said her early exposure to the entertainment industry warped her perception of the world.

The insider said: "She was the bread winner in her family.

"And when you know everyone's living off you, you learn not to trust.

"She was never really taught how to live.  Basic things: how to balance a cheque book, how things get done."

Another source told how Spears ended her brief stint in rehab because she could not admit she had problems.

The source, described as one of Spears' "closest companions at the time", said: "That would have required her to admit, in front of the world, that she had problems.  That was the one thing she couldn't do.

"Is there anyone on the planet, except Britney Spears, who cannot see that Britney has a problem?

"After that, she pushed her family, literally everyone, away."

Another friend says things started to go wrong in the Toxic singer's life when she split up with ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake.

The source said: "Ever since then, "she's been mad at the world."

And another former advisor said she made a mistake in starring in reality TV show with now ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The source said: "'Chaotic' destroyed the image that we had worked so carefully to create.

"She thought that if she showed the world everything, everyone would love her for it.  What it did, instead, was make her look like white trash - and that is not what she is.

"She's better than that.  It created an appetite for this wild and crazy girl and created this spiral where nothing can satisfy that appetite."
