Steven Spielberg launches one-man boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Steven SpielbergSteven Spielberg has launched a one-man boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The Indiana Jones director pulled his support for the games because of the Chinese government's policy over Darfur.

Spielberg had been working as a special artistic adviser to the Beijing Olympic Committee. "I find that my conscience will not allow me to continue business as usual," Spielberg said.

"At this point, my time and energy must be spent on doing all I can to help bring an end to the unspeakable crimes against humanity that continue to be committed in Darfur."

In April 2007 Spielberg wrote to the Chinese President, Hu Jintao, asking him to alter Chinese policy in Darfur. Critics say China has blocked efforts at the United Nations to bring an end to the genocide in Darfur.

Actress Mia Farrow has also been a vocal critic of China's policy on Darfur.
