Juno wonder Ellen Page says she "really feels bad" for other young stars who "get into drugs".
The actress - who came from nowhere to becoming a favorite for the best actress Oscar - says she feels real "compassion" for celebrities who go off the rails. And she believes rather than criticizing the celebrities, people should instead be looking to help them by asking why they are turning to booze and drugs.
"I feel really bad for those individuals and a lot of compassion," Page, 21, said. "One of the big problems is, no one really says, 'Why is this happening?'
"And no one really offers that insight. They just get consistently judged for it."
Fellow female stars like Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton have all become as famous for their wild ways as they have for their acting or singing. And the men are often close behind - most tragically with Heath Ledger's recent death from an overdose of prescription pills.
But Page still does not believe it is a new trend - just one that is more high-profile because of the intense media spotlight that now exists.
"People just like to pick away at other people, you know?," she said."You have Web sites that are just devoted to finding a stain on an actor's pants.
"I would like anyone else who does that judging to be in that person's position and see what that feels like."
