Britney Spears’ therapist is “caring, compassionate and concerned”

Britney SpearsBritney Spears' shrink is a highly respected therapist known for her compassion, a former colleague claims.

"She's an excellent clinician and an excellent psychiatrist," says Harold Young, the clinical director at the Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, where Spears' psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel worked for about five years.

Nadel graduated from University of California Medical School in San Francisco 18 years ago, and she did her residency at UCLA - where Spears currently is, records show.

Nadel, who recently began treating the 26-year-old pop wreck, had instigated Britney's second hospitalization in January, this time at UCLA Medical Center's psychiatric ward, for a 72-hour evaluation, sources tell America's People magazine.

Spears chose Nadel from a list of doctors recommended by her lawyers, a source says.

Young, who worked with Nadel about 12 years ago at the center – a non-profit agency that provides low-cost counseling to people in need – said Nadel is now on the staff at UCLA and is "well thought of in the therapeutic community."

"I think [Britney] is in somebody's hands who will be caring, concerned, compassionate and respectful," says Young.

The singer - who recently lost custody of her two children to ex-husband Kevin Federline, but is allowed a telephonic relationship with Sean Preston and Jaden James, has been classified as 'G.D.' - Gravely Disabled, according to reports.

It is alleged that sources at UCLA Medical Center in LA have diagnosed Spears with G.D. because she is unable to take care of her basic needs, like acquiring food, clothing or shelter.

If Spears has been classified as being G.D. that would mean she could be involuntarily committed to the medical center.

It is believed that several health care professionals have said Britney is in a "manic state" due to her bipolar disorder.

The Toxic star, 26, was reportedly arguing with mum, Lynne Spears, when she arrived at the UCLA Medical Center at around 2am.

It has been said that Britney accused her mother of sleeping with her boyfriend, and screamed in the hospital: "the only reason she's admitting me is because she wants to be alone with her boyfriend! She wants to sleep with my boyfriend!"

The latest saga of the Britney Spears tale took a new twist last night (31 January) as the distressed singer was rushed to an LA hospital on the orders of her new psychiatrist.

It has been reported that Britney's psychiatrist, who works out of UCLA Medical Center, visited her earlier in the evening, and was alarmed at her reckless driving and her conduct, and felt her condition had deteriorated.

It is alleged that he decided Britney needed to be hospitalized on a 5150 hold, which would mean she would be considered a danger to herself and others.
