Mariah Carey refuses to look ugly on-screen

Mariah CareyMariah Carey is refusing to follow Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Gwyneth Paltrow by going ugly for the movies.

The sexy singer is hoping to get respect for her role in upcoming movie Tennessee - but was horrified when producers suggest she look ugly on-screen.

The star then refused to wear bushy eyebrows and an ugly fake nose for the part - even though such tactics have helped other actresses win awards.

"Mariah is the nicest person to work with; everyone loves her," says the snitch. "But she was uncomfortable being 'uglied-up' for the part."

Carey plays a Southern waitress who sets off with two brothers in search of their father in the movie being produced by Lee Daniels.

The movie makers wanted her to look less glam to be more believable - but Mariah was having none of it. "When she saw the nose, she called her people and decided against it," says the source.

"She was not a diva about it, but she did seem very insecure about her appearance."

Nicoel Kidman won huge respect for wearing her fake nose to play Virginia Woolf in The Hours, while Theron won her Oscar for her role in which she was unrecognisible as a Hollywood beauty in Monster. Even Gwyneth Paltrow was happy to radically change her appearance, wearing a fat suit in Shallow Hal.
